Mark Zukerberg the founder and CEO of Facebook visited Delhi and addressed the people in India. He also visited few places near by Delhi like Agra (Tajmahal), India Gate etc., He praised India on the way of his Journey and finally reached the Delhi IIT for the first Q&A meeting in India.
Earlier he has done many Town-hall meetings at Facebook Head Quarters but this Q&A town hall meeting made his day and also cleared many doubts of Indians. The Indian students gave a warm welcome to Mark and Mark addressed the people in the auditorium saying thanks and “Its great being in India and the energy here is awesome Thank you all for coming out here as it is the first Q&A in India and very excited to be here, its a good opportunity to interact with the people also what they are thinking about”.
He started his speech with the significance of connectivity from one to one all over the world. He also stated that “Q&A is very important for us to take feedback from different people all over the world. We planned to start the Q&As every week from the company that giving a good opportunity to the people to question any thing from them. We have been traveling around the world to lot of places and pleasure being in India to listen and get the questions from you!”.
Facebook has 130 million users from India and it is the second largest country which uses Facebook after United States. He also explained the significance of the safety check for earth quake affected persons. He explained about the safety check that “We always try to provide better services to connect the people by coming up with different ideas and also we take care of the people when they are affected by disasters. And that is the reason we enabled the safety check option to know their loved one safety any where all over the world.
Facebook Q&A Town hall meeting at Delhi IIT
After he explained about the recent safety check for earth quake disaster the Q& A session has started.
Let us have a brief list of highlighted questions in the Town Hall meeting.
The very first question is
Q:1 Mark, Why are you showing so much interest on India? Answer honestly!
A: India is the World’s largest democracy. We think in two ways there are 130million members in India who use Facebook. It is the largest community who are being connected. Still there are more than a billion people in India who doesn’t connected to the Internet. Hence if we care more on the people and help them to connect the Internet then we can help them to connect the world easily. All the people in this world are deserved to connect the internet for all the basic sites like education, entertainment and social communities. For every 10 people who can access the internet, 1 person will get the Job also we can lift up the poverty. I actually think that connecting people in India is that all the ideas can produce each other who can become entrepreneurs. The only interest in India I had is to connect the larger community over the world. We really want to get the next billion people in India online. And that’s what I personally care a lot about India and that is why I am so excited to be here.
Q:2 How do you connect the rest of the billion people in India to Facebook?
A: This is what the key question is, the program we started is Internet.org and our mission is to connect 4 billion users all over world who doesn’t have the access to the internet. Firstly if we want to connect the people we need to face few challenges mainly three challenges we must consider. They are
- Availability : You have a smart phone but there is no internet access to connect
- Affordability : You have a phone and you have the access to connect. However the internet is very expensive to use.
- Awareness : This is the key concept need to be considered that if you have access to the phone and if you are free to connect. You may not be able to connect if you are not aware of using the right facility.
We are investing the new plans for connectivity. Solar plains upward in the air beam down the connectivity. We are planning to invest a satellite for connectivity. Firstly we must introduce the basic connective sites like education, Wikipedia but not the up streaming sites like high data usage video loading sites. Initially if we help people to connect to the Internet then later on the people can afford for forth use of Internet by paying for few data plans. That’s the great plan we are going to invest for the people to connect in India.
Q: 3 Seriously don’t want to receive Candy Crush requests. How to stop this?
A: We really understand the annoying kind of requests from Candy Crush and other game platforms. These questions are very important and that is the reason we conduct Q & A’s to understand the convenience of the people to use the service. Coming back to the questions we already started working on it and our developer engineers started finding solution for this. We started prioritizing it and we are doing it.
Q:4 Want to know how Oculus rift is incorporated with Social media? and how we are going take this advantage in terms of technology as a developer?
A: For your second question, we have Oculus shipped some where 200000 and started selling it for 200$ you can buy this and started using it for your technology purpose and about the first question you asked, how the Oculus rift is incorporated with Social Media. One of the big trends we see on Facebook is sharing what’s important. Initially we started sharing text and images and now we are sharing all of our experiences and ideas in terms of videos. I don’t think the videos are the end of the change. We must go with the 3 d experience from 2d and we must think. You want to be able to feel that you were there by virtual reality. Me and my wife are expecting a baby girl and when we experience that moment, we want to capture that moments and want to share with our family. This is really going to be the next level of sharing on social media and we are going 5 years future to capture and share our experience through social media. This is going to be amazing and I am very excited about that.
Q: 5 Facebook has started working on AI recently. What are some important products we can expect from AI?
A: AI is very exciting part we want to develop. Machines are going to respond better than humans in future. Can translate, speak, sense and express more than humans in future. For the fore time we can able to build the computers and these are more intelligent in future any way. We take accessibility features for Facebook using Artificial intelligence. Let us say a person is blind and we are going to take the movements of his friends to get the access to the blind person. You can show a photo and read what’s there in the photo using Artificial Intelligence. The second most important use of Artificial Intelligence is that in future, we enable the safety check more reliable and we can automatically identify the people who affected in earthquake by looking into maps. We Strongly believe that computers are going to perform more reliable and faster using AI in future and we are going to implement what we believe.
Q: 6 How Facebook is going to connect the low poverty regions?
A: Just in few years we started working on the education for poverty regions we had 13 percent improvement. Creating new types of schools at Africa and slowly we spread down to India. People who doesn’t have the access to the Internet that is really going to be a problem in connecting few educational sites and information. We are really going to work on this more for the poverty regions for the betterment in the world.
Q: 7 What supernatural power you wish from Aliens if they gifted you to use that power for the betterment of the world.?
A: I wish there are many challenges interns of technology. For example if we take the Oculus we can play the ping pong in space and the place where ever you want with the friend who is not near by you. This is going to be pretty good!. You can simulate the things using Oculus in future. (Although the answer is not totally related to the question, Mark just tried to explain the technological features in Oculus)
Q 8: We see that net neutrality is a great initiative from Facebook. However does internet.org fully support the net neutrality or not?
A: Net neutrality is an important principle. We are pushing towards the regulation by building an open platform to learn some basics. Countries are going to want to regulate the access to the internet. People get hurt for not having the regulation in net connectivity. If we are loading videos by up streaming and if the service provider costs more then it is going to hurt the people. Any of the person who are advocating the internet.org towards net neutrality also should advocate to the zero services at all. If you have a student who has the Internet which helps to do his home work then it is going to help him a lot. If a fisherman in a Village want to know some fashions and that is going to help them a lot for him and his family. People who sign in the petition for net neutrality and internet.org and that’s fine we must support the regulation. But a person who doesn’t have the access to the Internet never give a petition to get the access for all basic needs from the Internet. And thus we must understand the key point. I think we are more responsible for this. ‘Don’t get twisted to the people who don’t have the voice’. We hundred percent support the net neutrality but also we need to continuously push for the access.
